In one debate, a couple of dozen MPs likened Russia’s actions in Syria to Nazi atrocities and made heartfelt pleas for Britain to step up help to rescue tens of thousands of Syrians caught up in the bloody civil war.

At the same time, in a debate in Westminster Hall, the Tory MP Sir Gerald Howarth claimed the decommissioning of the royal yacht Britannia was “one of the darker moments of my political life”. Everyone has different priorities, I suppose.
