Sir, Your leader, “Driving a hard bargain” (Oct 28) suggests that the assurance given by the government to Nissan to secure its commitment to investment in the UK may have been a promise to neutralise the effect of EU tariffs on UK-manufactured Nissan vehicles imported into the EU.

We can be sure that any commitment given by Nissan cannot have been given with any economic assurance on the basis of such a promise, since, under the rules of the World Trade Organisation, the EU could promptly neutralise the effect of the UK’s action by imposing a “countervailing duty”, additional to…
