A newly constructed mortuary was last week handed over at Wau Teaching Hospital in Western Bahr el Ghazal State after being built with funds availed by a Sudanese businessman.

Bibi Ali, who does business in the state, gave money to build the mortuary to deal help with the issue of rotting dead bodies at the hospital.

Speaking during the handover, Dr. Thon Mangok, the Director General of Wau Teaching Hospital, said there is a need to train staff to man the facility.

“The crowd that you are seeing today is at the new mortuary for the whole region at Wau Teaching Hospital. This building was a dream but a businessman came and constructed it and we are happy that it is being inaugurated,” he said. “It will be handed over to the state government and the government will hand it over to us. It is supposed to take more than ten bodies, but currently, we have three tables that we shall use.”

Dr. Mangok said the facility will be managed by a team that includes students from the college of medicine at the University of Bahr el Ghazal and a technician from within the hospital.

“We also have students of Bahr el Ghazal University faculty of medicine who will also be here,” he said. “Bibi Ali has done something good and we need to train 2 or 3 people, a doctor, and two technicians, to work in this place.”

The new mortuary has standard freezers and will improve the quality of postmortem examinations at the hospital as it has been grappling with decomposing dead bodies.
