Thirty-five fistula sufferers were treated during a fistula campaign at St. Daniel Comboni Hospital in Wau town of Western Bahr al Ghazal State on Thursday.

Last week, St. Daniel Comboni Hospital launched a 10-day fistula campaign in collaboration with the National Ministry of Health and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj at the hospital on Thursday, some women who have undergone successful operations expressed their happiness with the initiative.

Angelina Angeth, one of the beneficiaries, said: “I underwent operations five times before, but now I am feeling much better, and I know I am not like before. My sister used to tell me to be patient and keep praying to God so that I recover.”

Meanwhile, Mary Achol Bol, who had been suffering from fistula since 1998, said: “It started in 1998 when I gave birth, I was taken to Kenya, but nothing was achieved. I also went to Khartoum and Gogrial, but all failed, and now I have come to this hospital, I still don’t know if I will be better after this operation.”

For his part, Dr. James Ambrose, the Director General of the State Ministry of Health, appreciated the doctors and the Comboni hospital for successfully operating the 35 women.

“My sincere word of thanks to the team who came to operate 35 venerable women,” James said.

Obstetric fistula is a debilitating pregnancy-related condition caused by prolonged obstructed labour and leaves women constantly leaking urine or feces, or both. It is treatable and preventable.
