US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin visits Khartoum
US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is paying a one-day visit to Sudan. He will discuss with Sudan officials settling Sudan’s debt to the World Bank, the economic situation, financial transparency, and normalisation of ties with Israel.
Ambassador Maha Ayoub, Director of the American Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that the Mnuchin will hold meetings with the President of the Sovereign Council, Lt Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan, Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok, and several other Sudanese officials.
According to a statement from the office of the Prime Minister this afternoon, Sudan signed ‘Abraham Accords’ with the US, promising to normalise relations with Israel.
Yesterday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo signed on order removing Sudan from the List of State Sponsors of Terrorism after 30 years of sanctions. The US put Sudan on this list because it harboured Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden. The removal from the SST list was officially decided three weeks ago.
