US Treasury Secretary meets Chinese premier

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said during a meeting Friday with Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang that decoupling the economies of the US and China is “practically impossible” despite the trade differences between the world’s two largest economies. According to the Washington Post, Yellen told officials of US investment companies in China that “the decoupling of the two largest economies in the world will lead to destabilisation of the global economy.” Yellen’s comments come as US politicians call for a “disengagement” between the two economies to reduce Washington’s dependence on the Asian country, amid escalating geopolitical disputes. US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen called for “healthy competition” with China, expressing hope that “differences” would not cause a “useless deterioration” in relations between the two countries.
