United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) facilitates dialogue between civil society and security personnel

Khartoum:The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has played a pivotal role in facilitating dialogue between civil society groups and security personnel in Jonglei State. This initiative aims to foster an environment conducive to public activism by establishing a platform for ongoing communication and trust-building between these groups.

According to African Press Organization, the Civil Society Network in Jonglei, known for its advocacy for accountability, transparency, and human rights, faced challenges earlier this year when the National Security Service shut down its office, accusing it of promoting civil disobedience. However, through the efforts of the Jonglei State Governor and support from UNMISS, the office was reopened, underscoring the importance of maintaining open civic spaces.

UNMISS facilitated a dialogue to ensure regular engagement between civil society organizations and the security sector. Tara Sadasivan, a UNMISS Human Rights Officer, highlighted the importance of these organizations in ensuring responsible and factual reporting while maintaining their independence.

Kuch Isaiah Maluk, Secretary General of the Jonglei Civil Society Network, emphasized the value of diversity in security sector reform and the role of civil society as intermediaries. This approach helps bridge the viewpoints of both communities and security personnel, contributing to a mutual understanding and effective reform centered around people’s needs.

Police Commissioner John Rizak Alfanse stressed the importance of identifying root causes and understanding necessary outcomes to effectively resolve differences. Meanwhile, participant Ajier Malony Riak highlighted the significance of such events in educating activists about the policies that guide their efforts toward a fair and democratic society.

Organized by the UNMISS Bor Field Office’s Civil Affairs Division, the dialogue marked a significant step toward building trust and establishing communication strategies. These efforts aim to promote ongoing collaboration for a safe, accessible, and peaceful South Sudan, where all voices, especially those of women, are heard and respected.
