UN Security Council Extends Sanctions on Sudan Over Darfur Conflict

New York: The Security Council has adopted a resolution to renew sanctions against Sudan, specifically targeting the Darfur region, for an additional year. This decision underscores the ongoing international concern over the situation in the region.

According to Nam News Network, Resolution 2791 was unanimously approved by all 15 members of the council. The resolution continues the existing sanctions regime, which includes an arms embargo as well as targeted measures like travel bans and asset freezes, extending these restrictions until September 12, 2026.

Furthermore, the resolution prolongs the mandate of the Panel of Experts, which supports the Sudan Sanctions Committee. Previously set to expire on March 12, 2026, the mandate is now extended until October 12, 2026. This extension aims to synchronize the timelines for the renewal of both the sanctions and the panel’s mandate, ensuring a cohesive approach to monitoring and enforcing the sanctions against Sudan.
