Torit mayor bans night discos, movement of youth in groups

Torit Municipal Council Mayor Joseph Aye Joseph Oswaha on Wednesday issued a local order banning trans-night disco dances organized by youth locally known as niggers.

He said the harmful youth groups destabilize the peace of citizens in the town.

The order, seen by Radio Tamazuj, came into force on 14 July and directed that any party must be approved by the municipal council and defaulters will be fined not more than SSP 100,000 and or be jailed for six months.

“I, Joseph Oswaha, Mayor of Torit Municipal Council, Eastern Equatoria State, do hereby issue a local order banning overnight musical clubs/discos organized by niggers and any unlawfully organized group, any harmful grouping that may destabilize the peace of the citizens and movement of groups nicknamed niggers at night,” the order read.

Mayor Oswaha told Radio Tamazuj during an interview Thursday that only night vigils and licensed hotel clubs will be allowed with authorization from the local authorities.

“For any groups called niggers, I have issued an order that there will be no parties or nightclubs. We have already deployed the police and if you are got, you will all be arrested and be fined,” he said. “We do not have any problem with vigils. Night movement in groups is prohibited with effect from today (Thursday).”

The mayor said he has prohibited gathering in groups along the roads in residential areas at night.

“You who is got, you will be detained in prison for six months and your father will pay SSP 100,000. These are things I have banned because lives will not be lost just be like that,” he added.

Oyom Pasquale Angelo, a resident of the Morwari suburb welcomed the mayor’s order saying it will enable security organs to patrol and get rid of robbers and criminals.

“I welcome the order. The security within Torit is not good nowadays. You find what we call niggers (youth) trying to terrorize and also shorten the lives of people,” he said. “The discos have to be stopped.”

However, Oromo Alfred, a local artiste commonly known as Check B the Magic, said the order is a blow to nightclub lovers and artists and called on the local authorities to rather provide adequate security but allow nightclubs to operate freely.

“For me as an artist, I say it is the mandate of the mayor to ensure that music shows go on with maximum security instead of stopping these events,” If the municipality is not able to provide adequate security for evens, even the musicians will not be able to make money since there will be no shows.”

“We will be jobless and this is a very big blow because the clubs and events are where we make our money,” Oromo added.
