The police in Tambura County of Western Equatoria State are investigating the murder of their colleague on Monday night.
Edward Samuel, a Sergeant Major in the state police administration succumbed to his injuries after being attacked nearly one mile outside Tambura town while on official duty.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, the Police Chief Inspector in Tambura, Colonel Edward Gbaki, said that investigations are ongoing and some suspects have been arrested.
“The incident took place on Monday night at about 11:45 pm. One of the policemen, by the name Edward Samuel, who was on duty went out of the police station for about one mile when some criminals attacked him, and then he was wounded. He was cut on the head three times. The people who did it are not known but some suspects were arrested and the police investigations are going on. So, this is what happened,” Col. Gbaki said.
The local police boss said they cannot specify the number of those arrested as they are still carrying out more arrests in connection with the killing of their colleague.
According to Col. Gbaki, the deceased before his death said many people attacked him the fateful night.
He called upon the community not to panic as the situation is under control and he appealed to the relatives of the deceased not to take the law into their hands.
"I would like to tell the public that they should be calm as the police and all the organized forces are working hard to arrest the perpetrators. I want to also tell the relatives of the deceased that let them not take the law into their hands. We are going to find out who did this thing and we make sure the person or people face justice," Col. Gbaki reassured.
The executive director of Tambura County, Natali Cosmos, said they were shocked by the incident and have formed a committee to investigate the issue.
“It is the first time in the history of Tambura and that is why we formed the security committee to investigate exactly where these groups emerged from,” said Cosmos.
