Sudan’s military council says early elections possible

KHARTOUM Deputy Chairman of Sudan's Transitional Military Council (TMC) Mohamed Hamdan Daqlu said the TMC does not mind holding early elections within three months to hand over power to the people rather than other trends with specific agenda.

Daqlu made the remarks when addressing police forces at the College of Police Science and Law in Khartoum Monday.

The elections tend to select a government from the people and not from these people, said Daqlu, referring to the opposition Alliance of Freedom and Change.

He stressed that participation in the government would be based on percentage of representatives of the party.

Daqlu accused the alliance of attempting to exclude the army and the regular forces from the political scene.

The talks between the TMC and the opposition have been locked in stalemate over representation in the sovereignty council and its chairmanship.

The TMC is tasked with running the country's affairs following the ouster of former President Omar al-Bashir.
