Sudan Representative Urges Increased IOM Interventions for Displaced Persons Amid Ongoing Conflict.

Geneva: In a recent meeting in Geneva, the Permanent Representative of Sudan to the United Nations, Ambassador Hassan Hamid Hassan, engaged with Ms. Amy Pope, the Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), to discuss the dire humanitarian conditions faced by displaced persons and refugees in Sudan. This meeting was part of the regular briefings held by the Permanent Mission of Sudan with leaders of international organizations. Ambassador Hassan provided an in-depth account of the challenges resulting from the ongoing conflict initiated by an outlaw militia, which has been targeting civilians after failing to seize control through military means.

According to Sudan News Agency, Ambassador Hassan emphasized the urgent need for the IOM to increase its support and interventions in response to the rising numbers of internally displaced individuals. These numbers have surged due to the violent actions of the militia in regions such as the east and western parts of Gezira, where the gro
up has expanded its brutal activities since the onset of the rebellion. The ambassador also highlighted recent government initiatives aimed at accelerating the distribution of humanitarian assistance to those in need.

Ms. Amy Pope, representing the IOM, expressed her gratitude towards the Sudanese government for its hospitality and the facilitation of her visit, which included meetings with high-ranking officials. She affirmed her commitment to directing the IOM office in Sudan to enhance its efforts, ensuring that the needs of both displaced individuals and the host communities are adequately addressed. Additionally, she reiterated the organization’s dedication to prioritizing and continuously monitoring the situation in Sudan from its headquarters.
