Sudan Renews Commitment to Human Rights Cooperation with UN Council

Geneva: On the sidelines of his participation in the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Acting Minister of Justice, Dr. Muawia Osman Mohamed Khair, met with the President of the Human Rights Council and Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the United Nations, Ambassador J¶rg Lauber, at the Palais des Nations. The discussions centered around enhancing cooperation and coordination between Sudan and the Human Rights Council.

According to Sudan News Agency, the Minister provided an update on the human rights situation in Sudan, highlighting the efforts of the judicial authorities aimed at establishing justice, rule of law, accountability, and combating impunity. He emphasized the reopening of courts, prosecution offices, and police stations in Al-Gezira and Khartoum following the expulsion of rebel militia, as well as the restoration of electronic records at the Ministries of Justice and Interior. Additionally, he discussed the establishment of an electronic platform to receive complaints, which allows for reports to be registered without adhering to territorial jurisdiction.

Dr. Khair also detailed the human rights violations inflicted by the militia, which included the destruction of services, the occupation of civil objects and citizens’ homes, forced displacement, the bombing of markets, and committing massacres against civilians, notably the recent massacre in the Al-Getainah area, where over 300 innocent civilians lost their lives.

The Minister reiterated Sudan’s commitment to cooperate with the Human Rights Council and the High Commissioner for Human Rights, while stressing the importance of ensuring that reports reflect actual conditions on the ground, with information sourced from credible and reliable outlets. He also reviewed the transitional roadmap announced by the President of the Sovereignty Council regarding post-war arrangements, and praised Switzerland’s efforts to support Sudan’s stability through the contributions of Mr. Sylvain Astier, the Swiss envoy to the Horn of Africa, and humanitarian efforts.

Ambassador Lauber, on his part, expressed appreciation for Sudan’s cooperation with human rights mechanisms and the facilitation of the return of the High Commissioner for Human Rights staff to Sudan, hoping for the return of stability and peace to the country.
