The Hague: Sudan was elected a member in the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for the period 2025-2027, during the twenty-ninth session of the Conference of the OPCW States Parties, which was held at the organization’s headquarters in the Hague, Netherlands.
According to Sudan News Agency, this election came as a culmination of the efforts made by the Sudanese government to enhance its international standing and effective contribution to international organizations. The OPCW Executive is one of the organization’s most important policy-making bodies and plays a significant role in following up on the implementation of the provisions of the Chemical Weapons Convention and enhancing international peace and security.
In Sudan’s statement presented during the session, the Chargé d’Affaires, Minister Plenipotentiary, Amina Al-Sharif, affirmed Sudan’s full commitment to the principles and objectives of the organization and its dedication to working towards a worl
d free of chemical weapons. The statement emphasized the importance of international cooperation to support disarmament efforts and consolidate international peace and security.
Furthermore, the statement drew attention to the atrocities committed by the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, calling for its condemnation and the condemnation of its supporters, as well as its classification as a terrorist organization. Sudan’s election reflects the international community’s confidence in its effective diplomatic role and its ability to contribute to addressing the challenges associated with the prohibition of the proliferation and use of chemical weapons.
