Sudan Assumes Presidency of African Group in Geneva


Geneva: Sudan officially assumed the presidency of the African Group in Geneva, as of April 15th. This transition marks a significant step for Sudan’s diplomatic engagement on the international stage.



According to Sudan News Agency, the decision was made during the annual retreat of African ambassadors, where they approved the transfer of the group’s presidency to Sudan. Sudan will be represented by Ambassador Hassan Hamid Hassan, the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva. This appointment follows the standard rotating arrangement among member states.



The African Union Permanent Mission in Geneva has circulated an official notification to all geographical groups and member states, formally announcing Sudan’s new leadership role within the group. This notification underscores the structured and collaborative nature of the African Group’s internal governance.



Sudan’s presidency coincides with several pivotal events hosted in Geneva in the near future. These events are expected to spotlight issues pertinent to Sudan and the broader African continent, emphasizing Sudan’s proactive role and commitment to addressing the challenges and opportunities facing Africa.
