Security Council Strongly Condemns Continued Rebel RSF Militia Attack on El-Fashir

Al-Aiser: The UN Security Council strongly condemned, in a press statement adopted yesterday, Friday, the continued and increasing attacks launched by the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia on El-Fashir in recent days. The members of the Security Council expressed their deep concern over the escalation of violence, particularly in and around El-Fashir city in North Darfur State.

According to Sudan News Agency, the members condemned the attack that targeted the Saudi Teaching Hospital for Obstetrics and Gynecology in El-Fashir on January 24, which resulted in the killing of more than 70 patients who were receiving care and treatment as well as the injury of dozens of others. The members stressed the need to implement Resolution 2736 (2024), calling on the rebel RSF militia to end the siege of El-Fashir, calling for an immediate cessation of fighting and de-escalation in the area.

The Security Council stressed the need to protect civilians and civil infrastructure in accordance with international humanitarian law and international human rights law. The Council also urged all Member States to refrain from external interference that could exacerbate the conflict and destabilize the situation, calling on them to support efforts to achieve lasting peace.

Finally, the members reminded all parties and Member States of the necessity to comply with the arms embargo imposed in accordance with paragraphs 7 and 8 of resolution 1556 (2004) and reaffirmed in resolution 2750.
