‘Prophet’ Abraham Chol appears in court after over a year in detention

The self-proclaimed Prophet Abraham Chol Maketh of the Cush International Church for the first time appeared before the Juba High Court on Friday after more than a year in detention.

He was arrested in July 2021 after prophesying that President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar would be kicked out of office by or on Independence Day 9 July 2021. Since his arrest, Chol has not been tried or convicted in a court of law.

Chol and two others were arraigned in court before judges Simaya Sallah, Duoth Kulang, and Obaj Denyong on Friday.

However, the judges adjourned the court session till October 5th after two other accused failed to appear for trial.

The High Court premises was heavily guarded and only a few people were granted access.

Chol looked calm and healthy during the short court session.

Deng John, one of the defense lawyers said: “Our client spend more than one year and three months in prison while they did not see any judge or they were not brought to the court. So we want to see from the public prosecution attorney the evidence that they want to produce before the court.”

He was arrested alongside Samuel Mayen, and Daniel Malith, who appeared in court but David Chan, and James Garang who were released on bail did not appear before the court.
