Minister of Justice Announces Sudan’s Complaint Against Chad Welcomed by African Commission.

Portsudan: The Minister of Justice, Moawia Osman Mohamed Khair, announced that the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights has welcomed Sudan’s complaint against Chad. The complaint, filed by the Sudanese government, accuses Chad of supporting the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia in its conflict with Sudan.

According to Sudan News Agency, the announcement was made during a press conference at the official spokesman’s platform in Portsudan, where Minister Khair detailed that Sudan lodged its official complaint on November 1, 2024. A high-level legal committee was dispatched to Banjul, Gambia, where the Commission’s headquarters are located, to present the complaint along with substantial evidence.

Minister Khair highlighted that the President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, General Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan, had earlier established a committee led by the Minister of Justice to oversee international cases against the RSF and its supporting nations. This committee was formed on June 6, 20
24, with participation from various related entities.

The Minister emphasized that additional lawsuits concerning crimes attributed to the militia and associated countries will be announced in the future. He reiterated the commitment of the Ministry of Justice and other legal bodies to pursue the militia through international legal avenues.

The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights serves as a quasi-judicial platform for addressing human rights violations in Africa. The Minister pointed out that complaints can be filed under the African Charter, to which Chad is a signatory, and that Sudan has amassed sufficient evidence of Chad’s involvement in supporting the RSF through various means, including the delivery of weapons and equipment.

Minister Khair stated that Sudan views Chad as having violated the African Charter by aiding in war crimes in Sudan through its support of the RSF. This support allegedly includes the transfer of arms and supplies via airports in Chad, particularly Um jars Airport,
from Sharjah Airport in the UAE to Darfur. He noted that numerous international organizations have corroborated Chad’s involvement, providing ample documentation for international legal action.
