portsudan: Acting Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Dr. Abu Bakr Omar Al-Bushra, has countered reports suggesting a looming famine in Sudan by presenting compelling agricultural data. In a press conference held in Portsudan on Monday, Dr. Al-Bushra emphasized that Sudan’s agricultural capabilities and resources position the nation far from food scarcity concerns.
According to Sudan News Agency, Dr. Al-Bushra highlighted the successful completion of the summer agricultural season and outlined the well-coordinated preparations for the upcoming winter agricultural season, which commenced in the Northern State in mid-November. He dismissed allegations of famine, suggesting that the claims were politically motivated and lacked empirical data on malnutrition rates in the country.
Dr. Al-Bushra announced that the harvest in Kassala State was celebrated in early November, projecting that the summer season’s grain production would range between 7 and 8 million tons. This output, he noted, exceeds Sudan’s domesti
c requirements for crops and grains, thereby challenging the famine narrative.
The Minister reassured the public about the ongoing preparations for the winter season, expressing gratitude to international partners and local contributors, including fuel companies, for their role in the success of the summer season and the ongoing efforts for the winter season. He also addressed the impact of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) Militia’s disruptions on the agricultural sector, affirming that Sudan has managed to navigate these challenges and achieve significant progress.
