Head of ICRC Delegation in Sudan Explores Support for Damaged Electricity Sector


Khartoum: The Director General of the Sudan Electricity Company, Eng. Abdullah Ahmed Mohamed Ali, hosted Mr. Daniel O’Malley, Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegation in Sudan, for a pivotal meeting at his office on Thursday. The discussions centered around the support for the electricity sector, which has been severely impacted by recent events in the country.



According to Sudan News Agency, the meeting was a follow-up to previous discussions with the Minister of Energy and Oil, focusing on potential cooperation and assistance from the ICRC to various service sectors in Sudan. Eng. Abdullah Ahmed Mohamed Ali provided a comprehensive overview of the significant damage caused to the electricity sector, highlighting the destruction of conversion stations due to drone attacks by rebel militia.



The ICRC delegation, led by Mr. O’Malley, committed to assessing the possibility of providing necessary support to the electricity sector. This includes the provision of spare parts and contributions towards technical capacity building. The Red Cross’s involvement aims to address the pressing needs created by the targeted attacks.



At the end of the meeting, Eng. Abdullah expressed gratitude towards the ICRC delegation for their interest and readiness to assist. He assured them of the full cooperation of the Electricity Sector and the Ministry of Energy and Oil to facilitate the Red Cross’s mission in Sudan.
