JUBA, 02 August 2016 [Gurtong]- South Sudan Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin also the leader of the Democratic Change Party (DCP) commonly known as SPLM-DC has resigned from his positions citing that the peace agreement has failed.
In his public statement, Dr. Lam says, “This is to inform the public that I have on the 28th of July tendered my resignation to the National Alliances as Minister of Agriculture and Food Security in the Transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU) and also as their representative in the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation.”
“These positions were necessitated by the Implementation of the Agreement for the Resolution of Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (ARCISS) signed in August 2015” he said.
Dr. Lam added, “As per this agreement it was the National Alliances that wrote to JMEC nominating me to those positions. There is no more peace agreement to implement in Juba.”
Lam Akol accused President Salva Kiir of repeatedly violating the peace agreement.
“President Salva Kiir has dealt it a final blow with his actions since the first week of July culminating in the military attack on the first Vice President, dislodging him from Juba and invoking his absence to fill his position with a person of his choice in the name of SPLM-IO.”
“One cannot with a clear conscience serve under such a regime” he said.
Fighting broke out in Juba on Friday, 08th of July 2016 at the State House, J1 in Juba between the guards of President Salva Kiir and those of the sacked First Vice President (FVP) Dr. Riek Machar while the two were in a meeting.
Both President Kiir and Machar told the public they did not have an idea of the fighting that took place while they were in for the meeting.
That fighting continued till Monday 11th July with the forces of Machar getting dislodged outside Juba.
Machar is quoted in the media vowing to take over Juba again.
Machar who fled the country was replaced by Taban Deng Gai, the Former SPLM-IO Chief Negotiator after the SPLM-IO convened in Juba for a meeting.
Dr. Lam claimed the fighting in Juba was planned by the government of Kiir which the government has denied.
Lam says, “Since the agreement is dead and there is no free political space in Juba, the only sensible way to oppose this regime so as to restore genuine peace to our war torn country is to organize outside Juba.”
“For this reason, I have given up my position as the chairman of the Democratic Change Party. We are consulting with like-minded compatriots so as to build a broad national front to lead our relentless efforts to save our country from division and disintegration.”
