AU COMMISSION CONDEMNS ATTACK BY SOUTH SUDAN GUNMEN ON ETHIOPIA’S GAMBELLA
ADDIS ABABA, -- The African Union (AU) Commission has "condemned in the strongest terms the criminal attack carried out by South Sudanese armed elements" in the Jakawa area of Gambella Region in western Ethiopia which borders South Sudan.
The group of South Sudanese gunmen killed 208 people and abducted 102 women and children in the attack carried out last Friday.
AU Commission Chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma expressed Monday the AU's heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
She assured the government and people of Ethiopia of the AU's full solidarity and support in these difficult circumstances. She also demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted women and children.
According to a media statement issued by the AU Commision here, it looked forward to joint efforts by the governments of South Sudan and Ethiopia to bring to justice those who committed this despicable act.
