ARAB LEAGUE WELCOMES US LIFTING SANCTIONS ON SUDAN
CAIRO, The Arab League Secretary General Ahmad Abul Gheit welcomed on Saturday the US two executive orders on lifting economic sanctions on Sudan.
Abul Gheit said that the US step which was called upon by the League numerous times was an important and a legitimate call by Sudan and Arab countries, the League' Spokesman Mahmoud Afifi said in a press release.
The Arab League chief also noted that such move would help Sudan as an Arab and African country recover economically, expressing hopes that the US and Sudan would continue their dialogue and cooperation for the benefit of the region.
Friday night, the US reduced sanctions on Sudan, allowing it to conduct transactions in the US due to positive internal developments in the country.
An amendment to the sanction authorizes "all prohibited transactions, including transactions involving property in which the Government of Sudan has an interest," the US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) said in a statement.
