Answer – Reciprocity in trade relations with China – E-004639/2016

The Commission is not aware of the application of the process indicated by the Honourable Member but confirms that such practice is not authorised in the EU. The import into the EU of gelatine for pet food is not prohibited in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1069/2009, however, the use in the EU of ruminant gelatine in feed for farmed animals, other than fur producing animals, is not allowed(1).

The Commission raises this issue of the Chinese ban on beef imports from certain Member States on a regular basis on a bilateral level and in the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Committee on Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) measures, the last time being at the WTO SPS Committee meeting of 30 June 2016.

(1) Regulation (EC) 999/2001.
