ANGOLA’S PARLIAMENT SPEAKER IN KHARTOUM FOR ICGLR PARLIAMENTARY FORUM
KHARTOUM, — The Speaker of the Angolan National Assembly, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, has arrived in Khartoum to preside over the 7th regular session of the Parliamentary Forum of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) to be held in the Sudanese capital from Tuesday to Thursday.
Angola will hand over the rotating presidency of the ICGLR Parliamentary Forum to Sudan during this week’s meeting in Khartoum where issues relating to current developments of the political, security and humanitarian situations in the African Great Lakes Region will be discussed, in particular the situations in the Central African Republic (CAR), Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and South Sudan.
The official opening of the meeting of parliamentary leaders from the 12 ICGLR member countries is scheduled for Wednesday. The official opening will be preceded by a meeting at the level of representatives of the Executive Committee of the forum on Tuesday.
The Parliamentary Forum of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region was institutionalized in 2008 in Rwanda. Angola joined the organization in November 2014.
The aim of the Parliamentary Forum is to create a platform for the exchange of experiences, conflict resolution and dialogue among parliaments of member countries, to support governments’ efforts to prevent and resolve possible conflicts, and contribute to the consolidation of peace processes and reconciliation.
The ICGLR consists of Angola, Burundi, the CAR, Republic of Congo, DRC, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania and Zambia.
