Subscriptions to fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication technology grew by 64 percent in the Kingdom during the second quarter of this year compared to the first quarter of this year.
According to the statistical report by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) published on its website on Tuesday, the number of 5G subscriptions increased during the second quarter of this year to 51,491, compared to 31,334 subscriptions during the first quarter of this year.
The report indicated the registration of 793,000 subscriptions to fixed broadband internet services, with a penetration rate of 32.9 percent for the number of households in the second quarter of 2024, compared to 798,000 subscriptions with a penetration rate of 33.3 percent in the first quarter of the same year.
In contrast, broadband internet subscriptions using FBWA technology recorded 18 percent, while the percentage of internet service subscriptions using “XDSL” technology reached 11 percent.

ached 70 percent, with 556,000 subscriptions in the second quarter, compared to 548,000 subscriptions in the first quarter of this year.
The volume of fixed broadband data usage for the second quarter of this year reached approximately 1.289 billion gigabytes, compared to 1.249 billion for the first quarter of the same year, with an average monthly fixed internet usage of 542 gigabytes per subscription, compared to 521 gigabytes in the first quarter of the current year, with a growth rate of 4 percent.
The report indicated that the total subscriptions for mobile broadband services by the end of the second quarter of this year reached 7.908 million, with 71 percent being prepaid subscriptions and 29 percent being postpaid subscriptions.
The percentage of subscriptions for (voice and data) lines reached 84 percent, and subscriptions for data-only lines reached 16 percent, while the volume of mobile voice traffic amounted to 7.6 billion minutes, 97 percent of which was local and 3 percent international.
The
number of text messages sent reached 290 million, and the penetration rate of mobile phone subscriptions by the end of the second quarter of this year was 68.1 percent according to the total population, and 104.7 percent according to the population aged 15 and above.
The volume of data usage through mobile broadband services reached 627 million gigabytes in the second quarter, compared to 610 million in the first quarter of the same year.
The total number of subscribers to fixed voice communication services for the second quarter reached 491,000 subscriptions, with the residential sector accounting for 67 percent of the total, and the commercial sector for 33 percent.
The report showed that the volume of telephone traffic consumed by fixed-line subscribers recorded 11.5 million minutes of calls, 85 percent of which were local traffic and 15 percent international traffic.
