The men´s duo Edson Figueiredo and Bruno Makili won, Sunday night, the gold medal at the Africa Zone VI circuit in beach volleyball, disputed in the waters of Costa do Sol, in Maputo, Mozambique.
In the final, the Angolans beat the hosts José Mondlane and Osvaldo Mungoi, 2-1, with scores of 12-21, 21-16 and 15-05, thus collecting the first points of the zone event, which counts for the continental ranking and to qualify them for the African Championship.
Figueiredo, the reigning national champion, who also won gold medal at the African Championships in 2015, while Makili, a debutant in the national team, is the national runner-up and was the champion of the 11 November International tournament last year.
After a four-year absence from international competitions, the Angolan beach volleyball duos made a strong comeback in the African confederation competitions.
Regarding women’s, the duo made up of Sara Lemos and Catiana Magalhães won the bronze medal after beating the duo Sara/Sayonara, by 2 sevens to 1.
These Angolan athletes are undefeated national champions since 2019, and they are also winners of the 11 de Novembro international tournament held in 2022.
On the women’s side, the gold medal was won by the Mozambican duo Ana Paula Sinaportar and Vanessa Muianga, who beat their compatriots Natalia Intego and Angela, 2-0, with scores of 21-15 and 21-18.
This was the seventh consecutive Zone VI title won by the Mozambican duo.
In April starts the 2023 circuit with the tour of Namibia at the beach of Mole, in western Swakopmund province, with the participation of the same ten countries of this region, namely Angola, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, Eswatini, Lesotho and Namibia.
The Angolan team will arrive in the country at 6 pm on Tuesday.
